Trent Robinson has admitted that the search to rejuvenate and energise his team has begun, as the Sydney Roosters prepare to lose several senior players at the conclusion of the season.
The Roosters have lost several key players, including Joey Manu, Joseph Suaalii, Jared Waerea-Hargraves, and Luke Keary, who have all announced they will not return to the Tricolours for the 2025 season.
Star five-eighth Keary announced his retirement from the game earlier this month, choosing to conclude his $800,000-per-season contract one season early.
Keary’s departure from the Roosters has accelerated the Roosters’ progression plan of pushing Sandon Smith into the halves alongside Sam Walker; nonetheless, the coach has stated that he plans to pursue top players from outside Bondi.
The three-time championship winning coach stated that the Roosters were looking for a game-changer.
Robinson has expressed interest in signing Queensland Origin star Selwyn Cobbo, who will be free to negotiate with other clubs starting November 1.
“Yeah, obviously, you know the talent that he is, as soon as he came on to the scene you could see what a quality player he was and will be,” Robinson remarked.
“That hasn’t come up in discussion… that’s not on the radar at the moment, but [we’re] constantly looking at high-quality players.”
“I know his ability to play a few different positions is key, but we’re also on a path there with some of our young centres.”
In response to concerns surrounding Cobbo’s future, Broncos coach Kevin Walters stated that the club will do their “very best to keep” him in Brisbane.
“No, he’ll be staying here.” “Look at the environment here; it’s a wonderful place to play rugby league,” Walters added.
