This weekend, the Georgia Bulldogs will host the Alabama Crimson Tide in their second SEC series of the year in Athens, Georgia.
The Tide defeated Tennessee, who was ranked fifth, two games to one in the opening week, while the Kentucky Wildcats swept UGA in Lexington.
What a week can do for you. All weekend long, the formidable Georgia bats—who lead the NCAA in home runs—were on exhibit. In the three games against the Tide, the Dogs blasted 11 home runs, which accounted for 18 of their series total of 25 runs. The series featured a single game on Sunday and a double header on Saturday due to the rainout on Friday. The Tide dropped to a conference record of 2-4 and 18-6. UGA improved to 3-3 in the SEC and 21-4 overall.
Starting for the Tide against Charlie Goldstein’s Bulldogs was Ben Hess. At the top of the first, the Tide entered the game. After a wild pitch put Gage Miller on base, he singled to start the inning and scored when Evan Sleight doubled with two outs. The lead did not last long.
To tie the game at one, Corey Collins launched a big home run off Hess’s opening pitch. Charlie Condon, the best player in the country, trailed behind and was struck by a pitch. Dylan Goldstein then hit a home run, allowing Slate Alford to score after he had singled. Three hits, two home runs, four runs, and four batters. Miller walked to start the third inning and advanced to third on a TJ McCants double. McCants’ hitting streak reached 22 games after the double. Miller was scored by Ian Petrutz’s infield single, bringing the score down to 4-2. The next three hitters struck out, flew out, then struck out again with runners on first and third.
The Tide took the lead in the top of the fourth inning after Hess settled in and had scoreless innings in the second and third innings. With one out, Will Hodo opened with a single, and Bryce Eblin followed with a single of his own. After McCants singled him home, Miller hit a triple to score both men. With one out, McCants advanced to third base following a passed ball and a stolen base. But a ground out and a short fly ball left him stuck there.
