Aston Villa consolidated their fourth position in the Premier League after beating Luton Town 3-2 on Saturday at Kenilworth Road.
Villa went 2-0 up at the break with two goals coming from Ollie Watkins. Luton staged a dramatic comeback with Tahith Chong and Carlton Morris scoring to make it 2
In the 89th minute, Lucas Digne scored a brilliant goal to seal all three points for the Toffees. Villa are now 11 points above Manchester United in sixth, although a fifth-placed finish could be enough to secure a place in the Champions League next season under their new format.
Tony Cascarino has showered praise on Watkins for his performance and hailed him as “sensational” on talkSPORT. The 28-year-old striker is arguably one of the most influential players for Villa this season, and he was superb against Luton.
“Ollie Watkins’ form is just sensational. Again yesterday, Villa were really good in the first half, and him particularly,” said Cascarino.
Watkins has been outstanding this season
Cascarino has previously predicted that Villa will beat Tottenham to secure the fourth spot this season and they are doing everything right to qualify for the Champions League next season.
Watkins is the second top scorer in the Premier League this season and has 26 goals and assists this season. In the process, he has become only the fourth Villa player to net 16 goals in a Premier League season.
He is the only player to be in double figures for goals and assists in the Premier League this season and it would be a great injustice if he doesn’t feature in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024.
Watkins was in the provisional England squad for Euro 2020 but didn’t make the final cut. He was also not selected for the 2022 World Cup. But this is his biggest chance to represent the country in a big competition, and he thoroughly deserves it.
