The Green Bay Packers announced a curious decision to cut a veteran running back Friday afternoon after they listed AJ Dillon as questionable to play the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Dillon is battling neck and thumb injuries before this weekend’s Packers’ Wild Card game.

Per a statement by the Packers Friday, the team released veteran running back Kenyan Drake from the practice squad in order to make room to sign cornerback David Long Jr.:

The Green Bay Packers have signed CB David Long Jr. to the practice squad and released RB Kenyan Drake from the practice squad. General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the transactions Friday.

Long Jr. (5-11, 196), a fifth-year player out of the University of Michigan, rejoins the Packers. He played in three games for Green Bay after being claimed off waivers from the Carolina Panthers on Dec. 5. Long was originally selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the third round (No. 79 overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Packers have another running back on the practice squad, rookie Ellis Merriweather. If Dillon is inactive Sunday, the Packers will have Aaron Jones, Patrick Taylor, and Emanuel Wilson on the 53-man roster available to play the Cowboys.
