Cabrera Takes Over at Third, but Yankees Still Seeking Reinforcements
Oswaldo Cabrera has all but secured the Yankees’ third base job, easily outperforming Oswald Peraza in the competition. However, the Yankees aren’t completely satisfied and remain on the lookout for additional depth.
Current Third Base Outlook:
- Cabrera is the presumed starter, having clearly outshined Peraza.
- He performs significantly better as a left-handed hitter (.265 AVG, 8 HR in 2024) but struggles from the right side (.159 AVG, 0 HR).
- GM Brian Cashman is actively searching for a right-handed bat to complement Cabrera in a platoon role and contribute at DH.
- Peraza is running out of time, hitting just .184 this spring and facing the possibility of waivers due to his lack of minor-league options.
Cabrera Needs Support at Third
While Cabrera’s switch-hitting is an asset, his right-handed struggles make a platoon partner essential. The Yankees already have an abundance of lefties, making a reliable right-handed hitter even more of a priority.

Peraza on the Roster Bubble
For Oswald Peraza, the future looks uncertain. After a disappointing spring (.184 AVG, 29 wRC+), his lack of power and high strikeout rate have left him on thin ice.
With no minor-league options left, Peraza is at risk of being designated for assignment and potentially claimed by another team. If he clears waivers, the Yankees could stash him in Triple-A, but that seems unlikely.
The Yankees have given Peraza plenty of time to develop, but his offensive struggles persist. With Brian Cashman eyeing upgrades, it appears the team is ready to move on and find a more reliable option at third base.

Yankees’ Once-Tradeable Starter Now a Key Piece for 2025
Despite being on the trade block during the offseason, Marcus Stroman has become a crucial part of the Yankees’ 2025 rotation, especially with the team facing a wave of injuries.
Stroman’s Value Rises Amid Yankees’ Injury Woes
With Gerrit Cole sidelined for the season following elbow surgery and Luis Gil set to miss time due to a lat strain, the Yankees suddenly find themselves in need of reliable arms. Stroman, who struggled to maintain his role last season, is now expected to play a pivotal role behind Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, and Clarke Schmidt.
Yankees Stand to Benefit from Keeping Stroman
Stroman started strong in 2024, posting a 7-4 record with a 3.51 ERA in the first half of the season. However, he faltered after the All-Star break, with his ERA jumping to 5.98 and a 3-5 record, leading to his exclusion from the ALDS roster. Though he returned for the ALCS, his struggles made him a prime trade candidate during the offseason.
Instead of moving him, the Yankees opted to keep Stroman, allowing him to rebuild his form in Spring Training. After a recent win over the Phillies, the 33-year-old is working to recapture his 2023 All-Star level and bounce back from his late-season slump. With the Yankees needing all the pitching depth they can get, Stroman’s presence in the rotation has become indispensable.
