Could the Yankees Bring Back Sonny Gray in a Trade?
Over the years, the New York Yankees have given opportunities to plenty of players who didn’t quite live up to expectations in pinstripes—only to see them thrive elsewhere. One of the most notable cases in recent memory is Sonny Gray. The right-hander has been a consistently strong pitcher throughout his career, earning three All-Star selections, multiple top-five Cy Young finishes, and a $75 million contract that runs through 2026.
Now that Yankees star Gerrit Cole is out, Jack Murray of Bleacher Report has suggested that New York would try to sign Gray.
“Considering his age and previous stint with the Yankees, he might not be the most eye-catching option, but he’s had a late-career comeback,” Murray said. “He pitched 166.1 innings, recorded a 3.84 ERA, and had a 13-9 record in 2024.”
Would the Cardinals Be Willing to Move Gray?
Unlike the Yankees, the St. Louis Cardinals entered the offseason looking to cut costs. Despite speculation that they might trade key players like Gray or Nolan Arenado, they have yet to make any major salary-shedding moves.
However, reports from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale in September suggested that St. Louis was open to moving Gray.
“The St. Louis Cardinals… plan to shop veteran starter Sonny Gray while reducing payroll,” Nightengale wrote, also noting that Gray has a full no-trade clause.
Similarly, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported in December that Gray was still being mentioned as a possible trade candidate alongside pitchers like Luis Castillo, Dylan Cease, and Jesús Luzardo.
While trade scenarios can shift quickly, the Yankees could at least explore the possibility of acquiring Gray as a stopgap for Cole.
Gray Is Focused on Pitching—No Matter Where
For any player, being on a team that isn’t built to compete can be frustrating. The Yankees have remained in win-now mode for decades, while the Cardinals—historically a proud franchise—appear to be taking a different approach this season. Yankees Consider Trade to Reunite With $75 Million.

Despite the uncertainty around St. Louis’ direction, Gray remains focused on playing, regardless of whether it’s with the Cardinals or another team.
“You say a ‘reset,’ I guess, but what does that mean? It’s not like we unloaded everybody—we just didn’t re-sign the free agents and haven’t added anyone yet,” Gray said. “I don’t know, only time will tell. I’m getting more and more excited each day that I’m here, just for baseball in general.”
Although Gray’s previous stint with the Yankees didn’t go as planned, he’s now a veteran pitcher with more experience and a proven track record. If a deal makes sense for both sides, a reunion in the Bronx could be on the table.
