Yankees make another baffling trade decision that won’t surprise fans.
The Boston Red Sox made it clear going into this summer that they wanted to bolster their lineup with a right-handed bat with impact. A righty batter is one of the team’s primary targets before the 2025 season begins, according to Craig Breslow, chief of baseball operations.
However, the Boston team has not moved to acquire that righty hitter despite the Red Sox’s first full-squad exercise of spring training, which is just ten days away and requires all players to report. The Red Sox’s offseason has essentially come to a standstill. The Red Sox have only added one player to their 40-man roster since the calendar turned to 2025. That was Blake Sobol, a third-year catcher for the San Francisco Giants who only appeared in 11 Major League games the previous season.
Except in an emergency, Sobol is viewed as a depth player for the Red Sox and is unlikely to play in the major leagues.
Nolan Arenado has been pursued by the Red Sox in trade negotiations.
A possible deal for St. Louis Cardinals senior third baseman Nolan Arenado is apparently one of the major moves the Red Sox are looking to make, despite the fact that they have essentially done nothing for more than a month. According to reports, Arenado is quite interested in visiting Boston. However, no agreement has been reached as of yet, and several sources on Friday suggest that the Red Sox may suddenly have a new opponent in the race for the services of the eight-time All-Star.
The New York Yankees, the Red Sox’s historic bitter rival, are reportedly the source of that competition.
Before the 2019 season, Arenado signed an eight-year, $260 million contract deal with his previous team, the Colorado Rockies, of which he would be playing the last two years. The key to any deal may be whether the Cardinals are prepared to pay Arenado some of the $37 million he owes for those two seasons.
According to John Denton of MLB.com, negotiations between the Red Sox and Cardinals broke down in January because Boston insisted that St. Louis pay $20 million of Arenado’s next salary. However, Denton also stated that talks between the two teams to trade for Arenado have resumed in February.
However, according to Denton, the Yankees are also at the table this time, threatening to jump in and steal their AL East rival’s desired trade target.
Do the Red Sox need to worry? According to Ryan Garcia of Empire Sports Media, a sports website focused on New York, the Red Sox might assemble a more alluring trade package. Yankees make another baffling trade decision that won’t surprise fans.
Trade discussions are ongoing, but the Yankees have limited assets. Garcia highlighted that “New York has significantly less prospect capital, with Baseball America ranking the Yankees’ farm system 25th overall, compared to the Red Sox, who topped the list.”
He also expressed a negative opinion of Arenado’s altercation with the Bronx Bombers.

“Nolan Arenado is a pull-happy hitter who has lost most of his raw power, so Yankee Stadium does not fit what he brings to the table offensively,” Garcia said. “To even remotely make sense of an Arenado pursuit, the Cardinals would need to fork over a sizable sum of money and other teams would need to be unwilling to part with prospects.” Yankees make another baffling trade decision that won’t surprise fans.
According to Denton, the Cardinals are considering making right-handed power bat Blaze Jordan, ranked No. 22 by the Red Sox, a crucial player in the Arenado trade.
