The Brisbane Broncos sustain a severe injury blow. With star front-rower Payne Haas doubtful for the 2025 NRL season opener against the Sydney Roosters, the Brisbane Broncos have taken a severe injury blow.

Following surgery on his foot, which kept him out of the 2024 Pacific Championships, the Australian Kangaroos and NSW Blues player’s injury problems have persisted.

Coach Michael Maguire later revealed that Haas had undergone surgery after suffering an ankle injury during training last week, which was first reported by The Courier Mail.

The forward is doubtful for the season’s first round and is anticipated to be out for at least a month, though a return date has not yet been set.

He is not expected to play in either of the team’s two preseason trial games.

Maguire told the publication, “He has had a little clean-out on his ankle.”

“Recovery won’t take long. The physicians and physiotherapists believed that the timing was appropriate.

“Payne takes such good care of himself. We believed that by scheduling surgery, we could get him well for the first round.

The timing of the injury couldn’t have been worse for Haas, who only played in 14 games in 2024 because to a string of injuries, including a Lisfranc injury that kept him out of action for much of the season.

Bradman Best’s Younger Brother Secures Long-Term Contract with Rival NRL Club

Brisbane has secured a major young talent, signing Baxter Best—the younger brother of Newcastle Knights star Bradman Best—on a four-year deal.

At just 16, Baxter is regarded as one of Queensland’s most promising prospects and was pursued by multiple NRL clubs before ultimately committing to the Broncos. The powerful outside back mirrors his older brother’s playing style and has the potential to make a significant impact in the future.

Interestingly, despite Bradman representing New South Wales in State of Origin, Baxter qualifies for Queensland due to his family relocating there a few years ago.

This season, Baxter will take the field for the Souths Logan Magpies under-17 squad, competing against players a year older than him.

Having impressed in Queensland’s under-15 schoolboys team last year and showcased his talent in the Cyril Connell Cup, he has already turned heads in the rugby league scene.

“Baxter plays a very similar style to Bradman and has a bright future ahead,” a Souths Logan insider told Wide World of Sports.

“We’re thrilled to have him at our club. He has speed, strength, and a great mindset—the Broncos have landed themselves an outstanding young prospect.”
