In April, the Buffalo Bills traded Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans, shocking the NFL community.
The Bills parted ways with quarterback Josh Allen’s top wide receiver, costing them nearly $31 million in dead money and a $4 million salary hit. A 2024 sixth-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick were also handed to Houston by Buffalo. The Bills were given a 2025 second-round pick in return.
A month prior to the wide receiver’s departure, the Bills had suddenly cut a number of important veterans in order to save money. The Bills took a year to start over, seemingly in rebuilding mode due to the high turnover.
But the Bills went on to win the AFC East for the seventh time in a row. With a 10-3 record going into Week 15, Buffalo is in second place in the AFC, and Allen deserves a lot of praise for his valiant efforts. Leading the MVP race, the 28-year-old quarterback is having one of his greatest seasons to date.
Diggs, unfortunately, sustained a season-ending injury after only eight games with the Texans. He tore his ACL during a non-contact play in Houston’s 23-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Since then, the 31-year-old has been keeping a low profile.
On Friday, December 13, he tweeted, “Speaking less… praying more,” to which a fan responded, “How’s the healing going? Do you think Josh will win MVP this year?”
Diggs described his progress as “on schedule.” The veteran remarked that Allen “should shorty balling fr” if he were to win MVP.
Tension between the two-time All-Pro and the Bills had been for years before Diggs left. Diggs answered a fan’s tweet on March 30 that read, “Yes, Josh benefits from having a top receiver. No, he is not necessary for his success. Diggs was moved the following day after responding, “You sure?”
Before facing the Bills, the Lions had a significant advantage.
The Detroit Lions are getting closer to playing the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, November 15, one of the most crucial games of the season. With a 10-3 record, Josh Allen and the Bills are regarded as one of the AFC’s most formidable teams this year. With an 11-1 record, Jared Goff and the Lions are among the best teams in the NFC, if not the best. Both teams will do all in their power to win because the game is so important to them.
The Lions’ defense and its ability to restrict Allen will receive a lot of attention, but the offense will also undoubtedly be crucial to Detroit’s victory. Fortunately, the Lions might have an advantage going into the game.
The Running Back Duo of the Detroit Lions Wins
Berreman explained that, generally speaking, the Lions’ ground game will be crucial on Sunday as they aim to keep Josh Allen and the Bills’ offense off the field. Montgomery and Gibbs will be key players in this effort. He also pointed out that, beyond just the run game, Detroit’s running back duo has a “matchup advantage against Buffalo’s defense” that offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is likely targeting in his game plan.
Additionally, Berreman highlighted that Buffalo, entering Week 15, has given up the most receptions (74), most targets (95), and the third-most receiving yards (579) to running backs this season.
Berreman acknowledged that while Gibbs is known for his ability as a pass catcher, he often appears underutilized in that regard. He added, “As much as it would be great to see Gibbs get more targets, Montgomery has been excellent as a pass catcher this season.”
He also mentioned that the Lions’ ground game is set for a “strong rebound” against the Bills, noting that “the Bills’ defense has a significant weakness when it comes to covering running backs, which will definitely be exploited, especially with the two dynamic weapons the Lions have in the backfield.”
