On Sunday, Bills quarterback Josh Allen was hit by Rams linebacker Byron Young while running toward the sideline and stepping out of bounds. Unsurprisingly, the play resulted in a roughing the passer penalty.
Allen is renowned for his acrobatic plays as he gets closer to the sideline, but the referee’s role is to protect the quarterback in these kinds of scenarios. Defenders may find it challenging to decide when to quit playing him as a result.
When Tom Brady called the Bills-Rams, he sounded as like he understood the fact and didn’t believe a flag should have been thrown:
“The issue I have with it,” he said, “is that [Allen] has been so effective at completing passes in those situations. So, if you’re a Rams defender and he approaches the sideline, you have to stay focused and play the game.”
Brady also appeared to chastise the former All-Pro quarterback for exposing himself to such hits:
“Josh has gotta do a good job at getting that ball out of his hand if he doesn’t wanna take those hits,” Brady stated. “I understand that they receive the call, but if you want to be a quarterback who plays every week, this isn’t the kind of choice you’re making. Get that ball out of your hands, in my opinion, even though you know he’s as tough as they come.
Despite being flagged for roughing the passer 36 times during his NFL career, Allen hasn’t missed a game because of an injury since his rookie year in 2018.

Prior to Week 14, the LA Rams had scored 30 points, the most they have scored in 2024. The Buffalo Bills score 29.6 points a night on average. Therefore, it would have been quite prudent to wager on the Bills if you had to pick the first team to reach 38 points. However, the script for today is not going that way. In a shootout, the Rams have scored 38 points. The Bills have scored 28 points and have plenty of offensive energy remaining despite not being accustomed to playing from behind.
