The Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, and Boston Red Sox appear to be the only five teams still in the running for the Juan Soto sweepstakes.
Every team has a unique selling point that should draw Soto to their location. However, the two New York teams have appeared to be the top two in the race from the start.
Since the Yankees are Soto’s current team, their front office usually wins bidding battles for top players. Steve Cohen is the wealthiest owner in the league, and it’s difficult to think of anyone outbidding him.
Recently, SNY’s Andy Martino disclosed a startling development in the Soto saga. According to Martino, the Red Sox, Yankees, or Mets are not anticipated to make the biggest bid for Soto.
“It’s no secret that the Yanks and Mets are ‘all in’ on Soto, as one league source reiterates, and that there is a widespread belief among bidders that Toronto will come in with the highest offer,” Martino stated. “There is also widespread skepticism that Soto would go to the Blue Jays – but a source pushed back on that, saying that if a team is involved in the final bidding, Soto is willing to play there.”
A relatively recent development that completely alters things is the developing perception that the Blue Jays might be the highest bidder in the Soto sweepstakes.
New York would be eliminated entirely from the sweepstakes if Toronto matches or surpasses Cohen and the Mets’ bid.
Additionally, this wrinkle makes Hal Steinbrenner and the Yankees look weak. The 26-year-old superstar may very well join Vlaidmir Guerrero Jr. in the AL East for the next ten to fifteen years if the Yankees are unable to acquire Soto.
