Fans of the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies may not want to acknowledge it, but there are some significant parallels between two sports communities. For example, when players are performing poorly, supporters from both cities aren’t afraid to jeer at them.

Therefore, Phillies fans’ decision to try something new this summer was notable. Trea Turner received a standing ovation from the crowd despite having a poor start to his tenure. And the motivation was effective.

Yankees fans attempted to emulate the strategy in Game 3 of the World Series, cheering loudly and gave Judge a standing ovation when he took the field for the first time. So far, he has been hitting in the playoffs.19 strikeouts and 150/.280/.325 respectively. After his ovation, Turner went 2-for-3, and they thought the encouragement would have the same impact.

Voice of narrator: It didn’t work.

In the first inning, Judge struck out swinging while working a 3-2 count. In ten World Series at-bats, it was his seventh strikeout.

The failure of Judge’s ovation may have delighted Phillies supporters as much as Turner’s hitting run following his.

The Phillies’ best responses to the Yankees’ applause for Aaron Judge

It was uncharacteristic of Philadelphia supporters to be sympathetic and supportive of a faltering athlete. It was unexpected that it was successful. Perhaps it is not surprising that New York was unable to produce the same impact. The Phillies had a one-in-a-million chance with Turner.

Phillies fans mock Yankees for trying to give Aaron Judge the Trea Turner treatment

Perhaps Judge might react to jeering more effectively? The query was posed by at least one Yankees fan.

Because of his brilliance throughout the regular season, Judge will undoubtedly earn the AL MVP award, but World Series rings are far more important than MVP awards. Naturally, a player’s chances of breaking out of a slump decrease with increasing pressure. Turner managed to relax and make his delivery. To get there, Judge obviously needs more than a few applause.

Nike objects to the turtleneck trend used by the Yankees.

Turtlenecks have gained popularity among fans ever since the New York Yankees’ players started donning them under their shirts.

The Yankees’ five-year run from 1996 to 2000, during which they won the World Series four times, is a throwback to a bygone era, and not simply on a surface level. To discover the outfits the players are wearing this playoffs, the Yankees literally dug through their own archives.

According to a recent story by Justin Shackil of the YES Network, the turtlenecks that the athletes currently wear have been stored for years. This explains why fans haven’t been able to purchase them online, at Yankee Stadium, or apparently anywhere else licensed Yankees clothing is sold.

When Majestic was the official uniform supplier to Major League Baseball, the turtlenecks were licensed clothing. Nike and Fanatics, which acquired Majestic Athletic in 2017, are now in charge of that position.

Additionally, one can only imagine Nike’s feelings on the Yankees’ players wearing non-Nike apparel during games. The turtleneck trend isn’t as popular in Beaverton as it is in the Bronx, according to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic.

“Nike hasn’t been happy with the Yankees wearing apparel from another brand, multiple team sources told The Athletic,” according to Kuty. In 2019, Nike and MLB signed a 10-year agreement to ensure Nike would be the exclusive provider of on-field uniforms. Earlier this season, players criticized the new jerseys—citing issues with both the feel and appearance—drawing negative attention to both Nike and Fanatics.

Nike upset about Yankees' turtleneck trend: Report

However, the turtlenecks in question were previously supplied to the Yankees and were still in stock, and Kuty noted that MLB approved their use.

At the Sloan MIT Conference in March, Rubin remarked, “Usually when I get criticized, it’s because I made a mistake. This time, I’m getting criticized even though we followed the instructions exactly as given.”

MLB has announced plans to reverse some of the uniform changes Nike implemented for the upcoming season. There’s also a possibility that turtlenecks could become part of the Yankees’ official uniform.

During the first two World Series games at Dodger Stadium, temperatures were in the seventies. However, with Monday’s Game 3 in the Bronx expected to have temperatures in the low 50s, turtlenecks are likely to make a return.
