Due to his limited cap space, Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney had to distribute the funds among a few short-term contracts in the summer of 2023. After receiving a qualifying offer from the Seattle Kraken, which allowed him to become an unrestricted free agent, Sweeney did end up giving Morgan Geekie a two-year contract.
Geekie signed a two-year contract with the Bruins for $4 million, with an average annual value of $2 million. He finished his career season in Boston with 39 points, 17 goals, and 22 assists. He also had a great postseason game, scoring four goals and dishing out five points in games against the Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs. The Black and Gold had high expectations for Geekie going into this season, but things haven’t gone as planned.

Geekie has one assist with a plus/minus of minus-4 in eight games this season. Montgomery has shifted him about the lineup, and he has struggled wherever he finds up. Additionally, he has been a healthy scratch, which coaches occasionally utilize to give players a message or to give them a night out. That also didn’t work. Montgomery spoke candidly to the media during Monday’s practice at Warrior Ice Arena when they asked him what Geekie needs to do to become the player he was in 2023–24.
“Play more effectively,” Montgomery remarked.
Watching Geekie this season has proven to be more difficult than expected. At practice on Monday, Geekie was on the third line alongside Trent Frederic and Matthew Poitras, according to Scott McLaughlin of WEEI.

The Bruins would like to extend Geekie, a third-round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2017 Entry Draft, but he is currently making it difficult to make that decision at this early stage of the season. The Bruins are currently seeking productivity from any position other than the fourth line, and Geekie shown last season that he was capable of doing so. The return of last season’s Geekie is urgently needed by Boston.
