In Week 3, the Colorado Buffaloes easily defeated the Colorado State Rams. A year after an exciting double-overtime match, the Buffaloes prevailed 28–9 in Fort Collins this time.
But after the game, Shedeur Sanders and Colorado State quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi got into a heated debate. The Buffs signal-caller’s refusal to shake Fowler-Nicolosi’s hand was captured on tape and caused a great deal of controversy.
As both teams engaged in a lot of trash language in the drama building up to the game, fans rallied to Sanders’ defense. At last, in an episode of his “2Legendary” podcast, Sanders talked about what transpired between the two and the reason he didn’t shake hands.
“After the game, I said something to the Colorado State quarterback because he was talking crazy on social media, and he was really doing it for the clicks,” Sanders stated. “He wasn’t telling the truth in anything he was saying, so I told him what I had to.” Personally, I thought there was a lot of hate in there.”

The rivalry was reignited in the days preceding the game when Fowler-Nicolosi said, “We’ll see how far Instagram followers gets them.” As a result, after the team defeated the Rams in the in-state game, Sanders heard it, recalled it, and did not hold back his emotions. Sanders is heard on another clip declaring, “I’m human, too.”
Ultimately, the Buffs emerged victorious in their game versus the Rams in Fort Collins, earning the last laugh.
Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders is no stranger to controversy, and after his team’s win over Colorado State, he once again found himself in the spotlight. A viral video showed Sanders refusing to shake hands with Rams quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi following Colorado’s 28–9 victory. While Sanders greeted other players, he pointedly avoided his counterpart.
Sanders later explained on his show “2Legendary” that he chose not to shake hands due to offensive comments made by Fowler-Nicolosi. Sanders said he felt disrespected and didn’t want to pretend that everything was fine between them.
“After the game, I said something to him because he was talking crazy on social media, doing it for the clicks,” Sanders explained. “Yes, I spoke up because I’m human. You can’t talk about us the way you do and then act like it’s all good.”
Sanders also expressed frustration with the media for portraying him as the bad guy without showing the full context. “It felt like a lot of hate, but the media made it seem like I did something wrong. We know what’s really going on and don’t let it affect us.”
Before the game, Fowler-Nicolosi had criticized Colorado for focusing more on social media than football, saying, “We’ll see how far they go with Instagram followers.” However, after the game, Fowler-Nicolosi had only 209 yards and two interceptions, while Sanders had the last laugh with 310 passing yards and four touchdowns.
