Tigers option reliever to allow for the reinstatement of Reese Olson

In order to make room on the roster for right-handed starting Reese Olson, who was activated off the disabled list on Monday, the Detroit Tigers optioned right-handed reliever Ricky Vanasco to Triple-A Toledo.

Olson will start the series opener at Kansas City on Monday night.

During his 15 days with the major league team, Vanasco appeared in two games and tossed two scoreless innings.

On September 5, at Oakland, he was the pitcher of record when Parker Meadows hit a grand slam in the ninth inning to lead the Tigers to an exhilarating victory. Vanasco’s first MLB victory occurred.

The Rangers selected Vanasco, who will turn 26 next month, in the fifteenth round of the 2017 draft out of Williston (Fla.) High. Vanasco had a stellar Class A season in 2019, but his career was derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent Tommy John surgery, which kept him out of action for the entire 2022 season.

However, when he was traded to the Dodgers in 2023, he was still rated as one of the top 30 Rangers prospects.

Earlier this year, Vanasco made his major league debut; however, in Triple-A Oklahoma City, he had control issues (21 walks and 27 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings). With the Mud Hens, he’s been more effective, logging a 1.38 ERA in 13 innings pitched with 15 strikeouts and seven walks.

Olson was one of the Tigers’ most dependable starts prior to his injury, and even if he is only limited to about 50 pitches, he may be helpful in the final stages of the game. Olson has been out since July 21 due to a right shoulder strain.

Olson, 25, has pitched 103 innings this year with a 3.23 ERA, 92 strikeouts, and 31 walks.
