The Green Bay Packers’ running back room is far from what supporters and even the front administration may have anticipated following the conclusion of the 2023 NFL season. However, as is much too common in the NFL, things do not always go according to plan.
Many fans are curious as to whether star running back Aaron Jones will still be around in 2024 after the Packers were eliminated by the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL Playoffs. Despite missing the most of the season due to injury, he became the first player in franchise history to finish the season with five straight 100+ yard rushing efforts.
General manager Brian Gutekunst declared at the time that he “absolutely” thought Jones will return in 2024. However, as everyone is aware, that did not materialize.
The Green Bay Packers Cut Aaron Jones
The Packers wanted to bring Jones back in 2024, but they wanted to do it their way. One of the terms was that he would have to take a big wage cut.
By 2023, Jones had already accepted a significant pay cut in order to stay with the team. The Packers let him go because he refused to take another one.
Indeed, really difficult. It goes without saying that football is a 24/7 sport, and every player who has given their all to our squad is dedicated to that. That’s always difficult, especially the way he was in the locker room—clearly a very good player. However, I believe you get used to it with time. Following Jones’ release, general manager Brian Gutekunst stated, “It’s just kind of the business of football.”
But we hope the best for him. During his time with us, he could not have been a better representative of us. Thus… but quite difficult.
Jones ultimately agreed to a $7 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings, which was $1 million more than Green Bay was ready to give him.
Against the New York Giants on the road in his debut game with the Vikings, Jones had 14 carries for 94 yards and a touchdown.
Green Bay Packers Fans Turn on Aaron Jones After He Says He’s Excited for His First Home Game as a Minnesota Vikings Player
On Sunday, the Vikings will take on the 49ers in their home opener. Jones is thrilled about the opportunity to play in Minnesota for the first time as a Vikings player. He expressed his excitement for the SKOL chant, saying, “It’s contagious,” to reporters today. When you’re on the sidelines, you’re attempting to remain neutral and avoid joining in.
Even after Jones signed with a division opponent, the Packers supporters, who had been so heartbroken to see him go, had suddenly turned against him because of this statement.
On September 29, 2024, the Packers and Vikings play their first game together. Fans in Green Bay will undoubtedly find the game to be entertaining.
