Billy Napier’s potential is limited and still far behind expectations of winning a national championship, thus the Florida Gators should replace their third-year head coach right away.
The Florida Gators, who lost their opening-round game against the Miami Hurricanes 41-17, bounced back to defeat the FCS team Samford Bulldogs 45-7 this past weekend. Billy Napier, the head coach, and the Florida Gators were hoping that this game versus the Hurricanes would be a turning point, so much anticipation built up throughout the offseason. The Gators only managed 261 yards of total offense, therefore the game did not go as planned.
The verdict is still out on the third-year head coach in Napier, despite the fact that the Gators returned to winning ways this past weekend. Many believe that Napier’s position at Gainesville is secure if he makes it to 6-6. In his first two seasons in Gainesville, Napier has a record of 12-15 and has yet to have a winning season. He’s in his third season now, and this is his chance to shine.
The other notion that is widely held is that Napier and the Gators must appear competitive in games even when he loses, even though the 6-6 principle is still valid. They certainly didn’t appear like that against the Hurricanes, who have been their sole FBS opponent thus far this season. In the meantime, the Hurricanes, who are in their third season under head coach Mario Cristoball, seem to be a program in much better shape and a strong contender for the 2024 ACC championship.
The worst thing for Gator supporters would be Napier staying on the job for an additional year, based on what I have witnessed over the course of more than two seasons in Gainesville. A 7–5 or 8–4 record is the best Napier could ever muster, given that all but five of the players on the roster were either recruits by Napier or were acquired through the transfer portal. And it falls well short of what Gators supporters, who demand a national championship or bust, were hoping for.
Fair enough, the Gators were last significant under head coach Urban Meyer, who led the team to national titles in the seasons of 2006 and 2008. It’s difficult to imagine a coach like Napier accomplishing one national championship in three seasons, much less two, after reading that comment.
No fan community ever cheers on their team to defeat. I hate to say it, but the Gators should break up with Napier right away if he can only manage four or five losing seasons. If not, all they are doing at this point is delaying the inevitable.
