Aaron Boone Drops Six Words to Red Sox. The Boston Red Sox have had a rough start to the 2025 MLB season, sitting at the bottom of the AL East with a 1-4 record despite an offseason that brought in big names like Garrett Crochet and Alex Bregman. With little for Red Sox fans to celebrate, attention has turned to former players—one of whom has already landed with a division rival.
Yankees Sign Former Red Sox Reliever Adam Ottavino
On Tuesday, the New York Yankees announced the signing of right-handed reliever Adam Ottavino, marking his return to the Bronx after previously playing for the team in 2019 and 2020.
Ottavino is best remembered in Boston for his 2021 season, when he made 69 relief appearances, notched a career-high seven wins, and posted a 4.21 ERA with 71 strikeouts over 62 innings. After that season, he moved on to the New York Mets, where he played for three years before hitting free agency this past offseason.
In February, Ottavino returned to the Red Sox on a minor-league deal but struggled in spring training, recording a 10.80 ERA across five relief outings. After being assigned to the minors, he requested and was granted his release on March 23. Less than a week later, he signed with the Yankees and made his debut against the Arizona Diamondbacks, pitching a scoreless inning with a strikeout and a walk.

Boston and New York won’t face off until early June, leaving Red Sox fans waiting to see their former reliever in pinstripes. Whether Ottavino will still be on the Yankees’ roster by then remains to be seen, but his chances of winning a division title improved with the move. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Yankees are currently favored to win the AL East (+115), while Boston’s slow start has dropped their odds to +410.
