Commanders GM Addresses Terry McLaurin’s Future as Contract Talks Begin

After signing a three-year, $68.36 million extension in 2022, Terry McLaurin and the Washington Commanders are once again at the negotiating table. With his contract set to expire after the 2025 season, General Manager Adam Peters faces a key decision regarding the star wide receiver’s future. Speaking at the NFL owners’ meetings on Monday, Peters shed light on the team’s approach to extending McLaurin’s deal.

“We want to make Terry a Commander for a long time,” Peters told The Washington Post.

“He’s an outstanding player and leader,” Peters continued. “It was impressive to see him grow last season, not just in his game but also as a leader. Even great players can improve, and Terry proved that. We’ve had discussions with his representatives, and while we’ll keep those private, the talks have been very positive.”

Drafted in the third round in 2019, McLaurin has followed the trend of Ohio State receivers excelling in the NFL. Though he has been a reliable target throughout his career, he took his game to another level in 2024.

Prior to 2024, McLaurin had never surpassed seven touchdowns in a season—matching that mark only as a rookie. However, with No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels taking over at quarterback, McLaurin posted career-best numbers: 82 receptions, 1,096 yards, and 13 touchdowns. To put that in perspective, he nearly matched his combined touchdown total from 2021 to 2023 in a single season.

McLaurin’s production had previously been limited by inconsistent quarterback play, as he’s caught passes from 10 different starting QBs in Washington, including Kyle Allen, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Taylor Heinicke, Sam Howell, and Carson Wentz.

With McLaurin’s contract extension looming and Daniels still on his rookie deal, the Commanders appear poised to secure their top receiver for the long haul—something Peters’ comments strongly suggest will happen before the 2025 season kicks off.
