Bombshell Report: Yankees Re-Sign Top Spring Training Hitter

Bombshell Report Yankees Re-Sign Top Spring Training. After a dominant offensive showing against the Milwaukee Brewers—scoring 36 runs in three games—most Yankees fans assumed the team wouldn’t be in a rush to add more bats, except for possible pitching depth. Setting multiple records, the Yankees crushed 15 home runs, possibly aided by the controversial new “torpedo” bats, and exceeded expectations coming out of Opening Weekend.

However, as they prepare for a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Yankees opted to bolster their offensive depth by bringing back one of their spring training standouts.

First baseman Dominic Smith, who previously exercised his opt-out clause after failing to secure a roster spot, has re-signed with the Yankees on a minor league contract. He is expected to report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Smith was initially a contender for the Opening Day DH/1B role, but the Yankees prioritized younger players like Ben Rice and Pablo Reyes, aiming to develop their talent while maintaining positional flexibility.

Despite an impressive spring—hitting .297 with an .857 OPS, three home runs, and 12 RBI in 37 at-bats—Smith found himself squeezed out of a roster spot. The Yankees had multiple standout performers, including Rice, Reyes, Paul Goldschmidt, and Everson Pereira, which created a crowded depth chart. Surprisingly, after years of struggling to balance their lineup, the Yankees even found themselves with an excess of left-handed hitters, making Smith less of a necessity.

Though he may only get called up due to an injury, Smith ultimately chose to return to New York after exploring other opportunities, suggesting there wasn’t significant demand elsewhere. Given the Yankees’ history with injuries and inconsistency, there’s still a strong chance he gets MLB reps before the month ends—especially if the team cools off after their red-hot start.
