Yankees Receive Bad News on Trade Value of Record-Breaking Prospect. After years of anticipation, “The Martian” has finally landed in New York. The Yankees have spent six years developing outfielder Jasson Domínguez, whose exceptional talent earned him the nickname El Marciano. Signed as a 16-year-old in 2019 for a record $5.1 million of the team’s $5.4 million bonus pool, Domínguez was expected to be a future star.
However, his early performance has been inconsistent. In 2023, he made a rapid ascent from Double-A to Triple-A before debuting in the majors, where he hit .258 with four home runs in eight games before suffering an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. Though he performed well in the minors last year, batting .314 with an .880 OPS, his brief MLB stint saw him struggle, hitting just .179 in 18 games. This spring, Domínguez is batting .229 with 10 strikeouts in 35 at-bats, and his defensive struggles in left field have raised concerns. With the Yankees exploring trade options to fill key roster gaps, New York Post insider Jon Heyman reports that while the team is reluctant to part with Domínguez, his trade value is rapidly declining. “The Yankees wouldn’t even talk about Jasson Domínguez in (Juan) Soto talks with San Diego, and while Domínguez’s stock may be down after his rough spring in left field followed his rough late-season call-up, the Padres aren’t believed to be that interested anyway,” Heyman wrote.
For a player once regarded as the Yankees’ top prospect, this downturn comes at a difficult time, especially as the team’s need for roster upgrades becomes more pressing.
