Yankees Hit with More Bad News Following Gerrit Cole Update. The Yankees were already dealing with rough weather—now it feels like a full-on storm in the Bronx.

Earlier this week, New York took a huge hit when ace Gerrit Cole, the reigning AL Cy Young winner, had to undergo Tommy John surgery. And just when it seemed things couldn’t get worse, another key player might be out for an extended stretch—possibly the entire season. Yankees Hit Bad News Following Gerrit Cole Update.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Giancarlo Stanton, who was already battling tennis elbow in both arms, is now dealing with a lingering calf issue. The Yankees reportedly see a return by Memorial Day as a best-case scenario, and if Stanton ends up needing surgery, his season is likely over. Yankees Hit Bad News Following Gerrit Cole Update.

Losing Stanton for a big chunk of the year would be a brutal blow for New York. He smacked 27 home runs and drove in 72 RBIs last season, and when October rolled around, he stepped up even more, earning ALCS MVP honors during the Yankees’ run to the World Series.

With Cole sidelined and Stanton’s status uncertain, the Yankees’ road back to another American League pennant just got a whole lot tougher.

With Gerrit Cole sidelined for the season after elbow surgery and Luis Gil out for at least three months, the Yankees are scrambling to bolster their rotation. And it looks like they’re targeting one of the best arms potentially available.

According to New York Post insider Jon Heyman, the Yankees are among nine teams that have reached out to the San Diego Padres about right-hander Dylan Cease. Every AL East team is reportedly in the mix, along with the Mets, Cubs, and two unidentified clubs keeping tabs on the situation. Yankees Hit Bad News Following Gerrit Cole Update.

Cease, entering the final year of his deal with San Diego, is a hot commodity—especially with rumors swirling that the Padres may need to shed payroll. However, sources say they’re hesitant to move him before Opening Day.

After being traded from the White Sox last season, Cease was a workhorse for San Diego, leading the league with 33 starts while posting a 14-11 record, a 3.47 ERA, and a career-high 224 strikeouts in 189 1/3 innings. His performance earned him a fourth-place finish in NL Cy Young voting, solidifying his reputation as a reliable frontline starter.

For the Yankees, landing Cease would be a game-changer. With limited external options available, general manager Brian Cashman may have to get creative—though New York’s farm system has been thinned out in recent years, making a blockbuster trade trickier.

If they can pull it off, Cease would immediately slot into a rotation featuring Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, Marcus Stroman, and Clarke Schmidt. And with Cashman’s history of pulling off late deals, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Yankees make a strong push for the kind of durable, high-caliber arm they desperately need heading into the 2025 season.
