Mets' Clay Holmes Speaks Out Following Carlos
Mets’ Clay Holmes Speaks Out Following Carlos. Carlos Mendoza wasted no time making an impact in his first season as the Mets’ manager, leading the team to an unexpected NLCS appearance. Now, with superstar Juan Soto joining the mix, expectations in Queens are sky-high. On paper, the Mets’ lineup looks like a powerhouse, with Soto teaming up with Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso. But pitching? That’s a different story. Injuries have already taken a toll this spring, with Sean Manaea (oblique) and Frankie Montas (lat) sidelined. That leaves Kodai Senga, Clay Holmes, and David Peterson as the only healthy starters—at least for now.
Looking to provide some stability, Mendoza made an announcement Friday that clarifies the Mets’ Opening Day plans. According to SNY, the second-year skipper revealed that Holmes will get the nod to start the season opener. “He earned it. We like what we’re seeing,” Mendoza said. “I know it’s a small sample size here, but it’s very encouraging. He put himself in a really good position.” Mets’ Clay Holmes Speaks Out Following Carlos.

Holmes, who spent years in the Yankees’ bullpen before signing a three-year, $38 million deal with the Mets this offseason, shared his thoughts on the big news. “It’s an honor to be out there for the first game,” he told reporters.
The 31-year-old has been lights out this spring, posting a 1-0 record with 9.2 shutout innings, 13 strikeouts, and a minuscule 0.62 WHIP over three starts. While he’s primarily been a reliever throughout his career, Holmes did start four games as a rookie for the Pirates in 2018. Last season, he made the All-Star team with the Yankees but struggled down the stretch, leading the league with 13 blown saves. Mets’ Clay Holmes Speaks Out Following Carlos.

Now, as he transitions into a full-time starter role, Holmes will look to prove he can anchor a rotation. Across his career, he’s gone 24-22 with a 3.71 ERA, 74 saves, and 25 blown saves in 337.1 innings. The Mets are banking on his ability to thrive in this new role—and he’ll get his first big test on Opening Day. Mets’ Clay Holmes Speaks Out Following Carlos.
