Victor Wembanyama Made The Best Comment to the Spurs’ New Veteran Center Signing for the Rest of the Season.
After losing star center Victor Wembanyama to a season-ending injury, the San Antonio Spurs took an unexpected route to fill the gap, signing veteran big man Bismack Biyombo to consecutive 10-day contracts as their new starting center.
In five starts, Biyombo contributed 6.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game while shooting an efficient 66.7% from the field in 19.1 minutes per contest. Despite the Spurs going 1-4 in that stretch, he made a solid impact in his short time with the team.
Now, reports indicate San Antonio has signed Biyombo to a standard contract, keeping the 32-year-old center on board for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. A dependable presence in the league for 14 years, he will continue holding down the frontcourt in Wembanyama’s absence.

Biyombo’s first game as a full-time Spur comes Saturday against the Memphis Grizzlies, where he’ll face a tough matchup against Jaren Jackson Jr. and Zach Edey.
Currently on a four-game skid, the Spurs have dropped to 24-33 and sit 13th in the Western Conference. With their playoff hopes fading, their focus is likely shifting toward improving their draft position. While Biyombo has been a solid addition, San Antonio appears to be accepting its fate for the rest of the season.
Spurs Finalize Roster Move Following Gregg Popovich Update
Earlier this week, the San Antonio Spurs received confirmation that head coach Gregg Popovich will not return for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.
“I’ve decided not to return to the sidelines this season,” Popovich announced in a statement. “Mitch Johnson and his staff have done a wonderful job, and the players have shown incredible resolve and professionalism in sticking together during a challenging season. I will continue focusing on my health, hoping to return to coaching in the future.”
Popovich, who suffered what the team described as a “minor stroke” in November, has been away from the Spurs since then. With 1,412 regular-season wins and 170 playoff victories, the five-time NBA champion remains the winningest coach in league history.
Adding to their struggles, San Antonio also lost star rookie Victor Wembanyama for the season due to deep vein thrombosis—a blood clot—in his shoulder.
In response to Wembanyama’s absence, the Spurs initially signed veteran center Bismack Biyombo to a 10-day contract. Following his strong performances over the past five games, they have decided to keep him for the rest of the season.
“San Antonio Spurs will sign center Bismack Biyombo for the remainder of the season following the conclusion of his second 10-day contract, league sources tell me. Bis registered two double-doubles this week,” reported NBA insider Chris Haynes.
Biyombo has averaged 6.8 points and six rebounds during his short stint with the team, securing two double-doubles along the way.
