After the All-Star break, the San Antonio Spurs were dealt a severe setback when it was announced that Victor Wembanyama would miss the season because of a blood clot. The Spurs signed experienced big man Bismack Biyombo to cover the frontcourt void left by Wembayama’s absence. According to NBA source Chris Haynes, the Spurs decided to sign Bismack Biyombo for the remainder of the season in order to keep him on the roster with a few games left.

Biyombo was signed by the Spurs to two 10-day contracts, which meant they had to either cut him from their roster or sign him for the rest of the season after the second one ended. The Spurs needed long-term assistance in the frontcourt without Wembanyama.

Biyombo is in his fourteenth NBA season. After being chosen by the Sacramento Kings with the seventh overall choice in the 2011 NBA Draft, he was moved right away to the Charlotte Bobcats, who are now the Hornets.

During the previous season, Biyombo alternated between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Memphis Grizzlies. He has only played roughly 16 minutes per game in his six Spurs appearances thus far, five of which have been starts.

He has been highly efficient, shooting 66.7 percent from the field while averaging 5.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.0 blocked shot per game. Biyombo notched back-to-back double-doubles on February 23 and 25 against the Pelicans, posting 10 points and 10 rebounds in one game and 10 points with 12 rebounds in the other. Beyond the previously mentioned teams, the veteran big man has also suited up for the Toronto Raptors, Orlando Magic, and Phoenix Suns. Over his career, he has averaged 5.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game, with shooting splits of 53.6 percent from the field and 55.2 percent from the free-throw line.

With their current record of 24-33, the Spurs are ranked 13th in the Western Conference. It looks like the Spurs won’t be making the playoffs this year, since they sit four and a half games behind a play-in spot. News Spurs sign veteran, finalizing a deal to sign a veteran.
