Two-time Gold Glove Winner Signed by the White Sox. White Sox Sign Gold Glove Utilityman Joey Gallo to Minor League Deal
Veteran slugger Joey Gallo has agreed to a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox, including an invitation to spring training, the team announced Thursday. Gallo played 76 games for the Washington Nationals last season, hitting .161/.277/.336 with 10 home runs.
Originally a first-round pick by the Texas Rangers, Gallo established himself as one of baseball’s premier power hitters, recording two 40-homer seasons. He made his MLB debut in 2015 with a home run and four RBIs, becoming the first Ranger to achieve four RBIs in his debut. In 2019, he became the fastest player in American League history to reach 100 home runs, accomplishing the feat in just 377 games. That same year, he earned his first All-Star selection. Gallo secured his first Gold Glove in 2020 after a flawless defensive season in right field. In 2021, he made another All-Star appearance and competed in the Home Run Derby before being traded to the New York Yankees. After a seven-year stint in Texas, where he hit .211/.336/.497 with 145 homers, his offensive production dipped in New York. He batted a career-low .159/.282/.339 in 2022 before being traded to the Dodgers and later splitting the last two seasons between the Twins and Nationals.
Despite his struggles with contact, Gallo remains a patient and powerful hitter. His career 14.6% walk rate nearly doubles the league average, and he has ranked in the AL’s top ten for walks twice. He also ranks 38th among active players with 497 career walks. Though he has a high 38% career strikeout rate, his average of 13.8 at-bats per home run places him second among active players and sixth all-time.

Defensively, Gallo is a two-time Gold Glove winner known for his versatility. While primarily an outfielder, he has also played first and third base, even posting a perfect fielding percentage at first base in consecutive seasons. As he looks to recapture his All-Star form, Gallo could be a low-risk, high-reward addition for the White Sox. Two-time Gold Glove Winner Signed by the White Sox.
