To improve his chances in the 2018 NFL draft, former Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel is getting ready for the 2025 Senior Bowl. However, he had a fascinating conversation about his Hawaiian connections with a reporter while he was there. After a successful 2024 season at Oregon following his transfer from the Oklahoma Sooners, Gabriel is expected to enter the professional ranks. The left-handed quarterback finished third in the Heisman Trophy race with a season-long total of 3.857 yards and 30 touchdowns.

The Senior Bowl game is scheduled for Saturday, February 1 at 2:30 p.m. EST, and practices have been going on all week. Gabriel took a moment during Thursday’s press conference to address a reporter who used a two-word message to refer to him as Hawaiian.

“A reporter who calls Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel Hawaiian is corrected. “From Hawaii,’ Gabriel says,” the Palm Beach Post’s Joe Schad wrote on X, the platform that was formerly known as Twitter.

Despite being reared in Mililani, Hawaii, Gabriel is not Hawaiian, as one reporter claimed. He is actually Samoan, as the former Ducks quarterback clarified, and he was only brought up on the islands.

Hawaii is where I’m from. I’m not from Hawaii. According to another Joe Schad post on X, Gabriel stated, “I’m Samoan.” “I was born and raised in Hawaii. That’s all. However, there are considerable Samoan and Tongan residents in Hawaii who are not Hawaiian.

Gabriel’s play during practices this week has impressed observers, despite the fact that his draft stock isn’t as high as some of the other quarterbacks in the 2025 draft class. Additionally, Gabriel might continue to improve on draft boards in the days ahead if he can have a solid performance in the real game.
