The Auburn Tigers became one of the best teams in the nation when head coach Bruce Pearl and Johni Broome revealed that he was returning for his fifth season to try to win a national championship with the club.
With an 18-1 record after 19 games, Auburn has lived up to the anticipation and is currently ranked as the best team in the country in the SEC, which is generally considered to be the hardest league in college basketball this season.
Broome returned from a two-week absence due to an ankle injury in the Tigers’ tense 53-51 victory over the No. 8 Tennessee Volunteers. Broome is still a formidable player on the court despite his absence, and his effort on Saturday contributed to the victory.
He was named SEC Player of the Week on Monday for his performance, a distinction he has grown used to this season. His persistent ankle ailment surprisingly limited his playing time, but his influence was indisputable, solidifying his place as a National Player of the Year candidate.
Although he didn’t start, Broome logged a team-high 33 minutes and delivered an impressive performance. Coming off the bench as he eased back into play, he made a significant impact on both ends of the court. Defensively, he contributed four blocks, while also leading Auburn with 16 points and 13 rebounds. His seven offensive boards were particularly notable.
In addition to shooting 53.2% from the field and 28.9% from outside the arc, Broome is averaging 17.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.8 blocks, 0.8 steals, and 3.2 assists this season.
Broome began his college career at Morehead State, where he stayed for two seasons before moving to Auburn to join an up-and-coming school. He is currently in his third season with the Tigers and has solidified his position as the team’s focal point, helping them contend for a national championship.
