Robert Saleh apparently receives a significant guarantee from the 49ers.
The San Francisco 49ers appear to be taking a significant risk by pursuing Robert Saleh as their defensive coordinator.
According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, who appeared on the “49ers +/-” podcast, the Niners have promised to pay Saleh the most amount of any defensive coordinator in the NFL should he accept the position. The 49ers have spent so much time concentrating on Saleh that they haven’t given much thought to any other potential options.
Before joining the New York Jets as head coach, Saleh was the defensive coordinator for the 49ers for four seasons. The two sides are obviously familiar with one another. It appears that there is little question that the fit is still present. Saleh’s application for at least a couple head coaching positions is the main source of confusion. Even though Saleh isn’t the front-runner for any of them, the 49ers would start again if he were to get selected.
Nick Sorensen left the 49ers after the conclusion of the regular season. Most thought Saleh would be a perfect replacement right away, and the 49ers seem to agree.
The San Francisco 49ers will make Robert Saleh a record-breaking contract offer.
Finding a new defensive coordinator hasn’t quite started for the San Francisco 49ers. Robert Saleh apparently receives a significant guarantee from the 49ers.
After just one season, San Francisco let go of Nick Sorensen. It is currently seeking to appoint its fourth defensive coordinator in a row. The 49ers’ inability to progress on the defensive end of the ball has been largely attributed to this lack of consistency.
One name keeps coming up as head coach Kyle Shanahan and his team look for a new coordinator after a terrible 7-10 campaign.
Robert Saleh, the former defensive coordinator for the 49ers and head coach of the New York Jets, is the clear favorite to be hired. Indeed, it appears like the 49ers’ management has a long-term plan for hiring a new defensive coordinator. Or bust, Robert Saleh.
According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, San Francisco is prepared to present Saleh with an offer that would make him the highest-paid defensive coordinator in NFL history.
In a recent podcast, Barrows stated, “If you sign with us, we will make you the highest paid defensive coordinator in the entire country.”
Saleh, 45, was the defensive coordinator for the 49ers from 2017 to 2020 before departing to become the head coach of the Jets. During his tenure at Santa Clara, he was the captain of two top-five defenses.
The Jets sacked Saleh five games into the 2024 season after he had a dismal 20-36 record. He did, however, lead defenses that three times placed in the top five. He seems to be suited for this role.
There will be opposition to the 49ers’ offer to make Saleh the NFL’s highest-paid defensive coordinator. He is regarded as a contender for head coaching positions with the Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Las Vegas Raiders. He would accept a job offer from any of the three if it meant playing a smaller role for the 49ers again.
