The Ohio State Buckeyes secured a 28–14 victory over Texas in the Cotton Bowl on Friday night, earning their place in the national championship game against Notre Dame.

The pivotal moment came on a fourth-and-goal deep in Ohio State’s territory. As Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers attempted to tie the game at 21, he was pressured by Jack Sawyer, causing a fumble. Sawyer recovered the ball and scored a touchdown, effectively sealing the win for the Buckeyes.

“He’s just someone who truly loves being a Buckeye,” Coach Day remarked. “He’s always dreamed of moments like this, and to see him step up the way he did today—it’s incredibly special. He’s like family to me now.”

The resilience this team has shown over the past month has been incredible,” Sawyer said after the game. “Last year, we sat here with a bitter taste in our mouths and heard a lot of criticism. A month ago, we were hearing the same things. But we just kept fighting.”

Ohio State legend sends clear message to Ryan Day

Head coach Ryan Day praised Sawyer’s dedication and importance to the program following the victory.

“I don’t know if anyone loves being a Buckeye more than he does,” Day said. “This is someone who has always dreamed of being a Buckeye and living for moments like this. To see him seize the moment today — he’s become like family to me.

Jim Tressel, the renowned Ohio State coach, sent Day a message early on Saturday.

“Congratulations to @ryandaytime for their significant victory last night and for securing their National Championship ticket! We appreciate you taking the time to listen to our podcast; it’s always a pleasure to discuss Buckeyes with you! Let’s end this adventure on a high note! The message said, “#GoBucks#NationalChampionshipBound,” Tressel wrote.

On January 20, Ohio State and Notre Dame will square off in the national championship game.
