Jeremiah Smith Announced by Ohio State Following Rose Bowl Victory.
True freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith powered Ohio State to a decisive 34-0 advantage in the first half. Smith caught touchdown passes of 45 and 43 yards in the first half and finished with seven grabs for 187 yards, the most receiving yards by a rookie in College Football Playoff history, leaving the Oregon secondary speechless.
Smith and running back TreVeyon Henderson, who contributed two touchdowns, including a 66-yard rush in the second quarter, were awarded Offensive Player of the Game by Ohio State on Thursday after Smith’s outstanding effort.
One of the most exceptional freshmen in recent college football history is Jeremiah Smith. His outstanding skill set has been on full display in the first two College Football Playoff games, and his quick improvement has thrust him into the conversation as perhaps the nation’s finest wide receiver.
Smith helped the Buckeyes defeat the Volunteers 42–17 in the opening round by hauling in six receptions for 103 yards and two scores. Smith boldly advised Oregon not to single-cover him before the Rose Bowl, and even though he was “poking the bear,” he delivered on his word.
The Buckeyes are currently getting ready for the Cotton Bowl, where they will play the Texas Longhorns, ranked fifth, in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
