There are more starting pitchers than the New York Yankees can use. The team’s ace, Gerrit Cole, is joined at the top of the rotation by free-agent addition Max Fried. New York completes the rotation with Marcus Stroman, Carlos Rodon, Luis Gil, and Clark Schmidt after trading Nester Cortes to the Milwaukee Brewers.
It is obvious that the Bronx Bombers need to deal one of their major league starters when you consider that the Yankees have a number of excellent pitching prospects that are prepared for the main leagues.
According to Austin Owens of FanSided, the Yankees are expected to trade Marcus Stroman back to the Toronto Blue Jays, the team where the right-handed pitcher started his MLB journey.
“With Spring Training fast approaching, the Blue Jays need to act if they want to stay competitive in the challenging AL East,” Owens remarked. “While the Blue Jays have been quiet this offseason, the Orioles, Yankees, and Red Sox have made major moves. Acquiring Stroman would be a significant gamble for Toronto, but given their current urgency for improvement, it’s not an entirely improbable scenario.”
The Yankees would be better off clearing out over $20 million from their books, and the Blue Jays must make a move.
Toronto could use an extra starter, especially one with experience like Stroman possesses. The Blue Jays are as familiar with Stroman as he is with them, having spent the first six years of his major league career in Toronto.
There’s virtually no use in retaining Stroman on the Yankees’ loaded roster since he was a healthy scratch from their 2024 World Series squad. The Bronx Bombers would be in a much better position if they could cut his contract and add one or two prospects.
