Sean Payton, the coach of the Denver Broncos, was questioning a crucial choice he made during Saturday’s defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday.

Rather than try to go for two and the win at the conclusion of regulation, Payton decided to kick the extra point to force overtime against the Bengals. After the Broncos lost 30-24 in overtime, some questioned Payton’s decision to kick to tie the game at 24. If Denver had won the game, they may have guaranteed a postseason berth.

Although he stated that this was not unusual for him when making important judgments like that, Payton acknowledged that he had second thoughts about the move.

According to Mike Klis of 9News, Payton responded, “Oh, of course.” In relation to what the call would have been, you go over it frequently. As a head coach, you constantly reevaluate or do that based on the results. Right now, I trusted my instincts. However, I do believe that doing so is natural.

Each and every coach must make this decision. Earlier in the season, the Bengals did the exact opposite of Payton, and in that instance, it did not work out.

By defeating a Kansas City Chiefs club that will be resting its players in Week 18, the Broncos may still qualify for the playoffs. Payton might be reconsidering the move even more if they are unable to complete it. However, if his Bengals counterpart had acted differently in the closing minutes of the game, Payton might not have even had the opportunity to make the call.
