Chase Herbstreit, a 2025 three-star quarterback (according to On3), was added to Michigan’s ’25 recruiting class on Sunday night. Given that his father, Kirk Herbstreit, played for and attended Ohio State, the Cincinnati (OH) St. Xavier signal caller’s decision to commit to the maize and blue stunned everyone.
Each Saturday on College GameDay, veteran analyst Kirk Herbstreit can be seen breaking down one of the week’s marquee matchups as he teams up with Chris Fowler to call ABC’s primetime game. Herbstreit, who played as the starting quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes during his senior year in 1992, was part of the team from 1989 to 1992.
People were curious about Kirk’s thoughts on his son playing for his former bitter rival after his son, Chase, committed to Michigan. When Herbstreit posted on his X account, he was all class.
“I’m really happy for you, Chase! Congratulations on this amazing chance. I’m excited to see how you continue to mature and advance at Michigan. Keep grinding!!”
Perhaps one day Kirk will say ‘Go Blue’ to everyone.
Reactions from Ohio State supporters to Kirk Herbstreit’s son’s Michigan commitment.
With Kirk Herbstreit, Ohio State football’s matchup with Michigan took on a new significance. The ESPN and Amazon Prime analyst is considered a Buckeyes icon by many. But his kid is forging his own route, which has caused quite a stir among OSU supporters.
The quarterback in the class of 2025, Chase Herbstreit, shocked everyone by selecting the Wolverines. On3.com’s Hayes Fawcett was the first to report. The younger Herbstreit is the standout player for Cincinnati’s St. Xavier High. “Go Blue” was even part of his pledge.
While Michigan supporters were quick to embrace someone with the last name of Herbstreit, OSU supporters’ responses were very different. One was Barstool Ohio State.
The Herbstreit home was described by rivals as being “house divided” as a result of the move. Even Chase Herbstreit “grew up dreaming” of playing for Ohio State, according to Eleven Warriors’ Dan Hope. Barstool’s “Ohio’s Tate,” however, feels that the move is suspicious.
He questioned on X, “Is Kirk Herbstreit unaware that his son is being used as a pawn in The Game?” Kid is behind Bryce Underwood and a zero-star quarterback. He is only being used by Michigan to harass Ohio State. And they were duped.
Another fan made this audacious prediction about the newest Michigan recruit.
“Chase Herbstreit planting the flag at the center of the Horseshoe will go down as the greatest moment in college football history within two years!” a fan commented.
Has Ohio State extended an offer to Kirk Herbstreit’s son?
It’s time to deal with the next big issue: if the legendary quarterback was offered by Ohio State and head coach Ryan Day.
The recruiting period for the younger Herbstreit was comparatively calm. No other universities that offered are listed in his 247Sports profile. The outlet even did not rank him. In contrast, he was rated as a three-star prospect by On3.com.
Halfway through his second season, Chase Herbstreit assumed the starting position at St. Xavier. In his tenth grade year, he even led his team to a playoff triumph in the opening round.
According to MaxPreps, the son of the longtime commentator finished his final two seasons with 3,120 career passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. However, he had better stats his senior year, throwing 18 touchdown passes as opposed to five picks. In addition, he added eight touchdowns and 649 rushing yards.
Herbstreit is the only quarterback signed by Michigan for the Wolverines’ 2025 class, joining five-star Bryce Underwood. On Wednesday, Underwood formally signed his early signing period letter of intent to the Wolverines.
