“First and foremost, I want to thank God for all He has done for me. I am forever grateful!” He shared in a statement.

Georgia football recently defeated Georgia Tech in an unlikely 8OT victory that will go down as one of the greatest games in the rivalry’s history. However, what if someone informed you that overtime was never necessary in the first place? Before the intense back-and-forth overtime, what if Georgia had won this game with a play in regulation?

Kirby Smart discusses the play that could have beat Georgia Tech in regulation

Early in the third quarter, Carson Beck hit Oscar Delp for a two-yard touchdown, giving UGA its first points of the contest. However, Kirby Smart chose to go for two instead of kicking the extra point, which ultimately failed to keep the score at 17-6.

Kicking the extra point would have allowed UGA to tie the game with another touchdown and field goal, therefore this decision did not make much sense at the time. However, it was obvious that Smart did not want to do that.

During his postgame press conference, Smart was questioned about this choice, and this was his justification.

Yes, that is an intriguing question. I won’t go into great detail about that,” Smart said on 247sports.com. “It’s analytics, and we adhere to them closely. That is our responsibility. You have to kick an extra point to win the game, so it looked pretty intriguing in the end.

An extra point wins the game in regulation
Although it would have been impossible to know this at the time of Georgia’s third-quarter touchdown, the game would have ended in regulation if UGA had chosen to kick the extra point rather than go for two. Georgia would have won the game 28-27 in regulation if everything else had remained the same, which is a hefty assumption.

Ultimately, this isn’t very significant because Georgia still prevailed. But if Georgia had lost in overtime, can you imagine how angry people would have been over this decision?

The “analytics” response is intriguing because it’s hard to understand why someone wouldn’t want to turn the game into a 10-point contest at that particular moment. It might be feasible to take the lead with a touchdown and field goal after scoring on that two-point conversion, but it does appear like it would be wiser to play it safe and simply kick the extra point.

Fortunately, though, this choice didn’t backfire, as UGA managed to win in overtime. And perhaps we should be grateful that we were able to witness the incredible game that was played during the eight overtimes rather than only winning by a single point in regulation.
