Even if it’s only NBA preseason, it’s still a major event when the Memphis Grizzlies defeated the Chicago Bulls 124-121 after trailing by 21 points. Given that the club performed without its best players, Coach Taylor Jenkins’ boldness under duress and the resiliency of the supporting group were demonstrated. With 24 points, rookie Jaylen Wells led the Grizzlies in scoring, followed by 20 from Jake LaRavia. With a combined score of 33 points, Zach Edey and Jay Huff, the big man rotation, continue to show promise. Let’s examine some of the most important lessons learned from Memphis’ victory.

A CASE IS BEING MADE BY JAYLEN WELLS FOR A SPOT IN THE ROTATION

Since he was a standout in the Las Vegas Summer League squad, Wells has been an effective performer for the Grizzlies. While GG Jackson II and Scotty Pippen Jr. were undoubtedly named to the First Team All-Summer League, Wells shown incredible qualities during their run to the Finals.

He played like the best player on the court in this game against Chicago, displaying a natural aptitude for scoring. Although Jaylen is a dependable catch-and-shoot player, he showed against Chicago that he could also create space by pulling up for a jump shot or making hard drives to the lane.

Chicago Bulls: Zach LaVine scores 28 points in preseason loss

The most significant play of the game was Wells’ game-winning three-pointer, which put the Bulls behind 122-119 and out of contention. Wells continues to show why Coach Jenkins should keep him in his starting lineup.

THE GRIZZLIES ARE A SMART DUO OF BIG MEN. Since Edey is a true 7’4″ center who is agile and a dependable scoring option in the paint, the majority of Memphis fans are overjoyed with him. His ability to establish himself as a dominant force in the paint on both ends of the court makes him essential to the Grizzlies’ success.

Edey needs to sit on the bench despite his achievements, thus having a strong backup is essential. This is where Huff enters the picture, having established himself as the top contender for a two-way contract due to his ability to serve as the Grizzlies’ dependable big man in reserve.

THE PLAYERS HAVE AN ATTITUDE OF NEVER SAY DIE. A team’s mindset plays a major role in their success, hence losing by 21 points can demoralize any group. After persistently battling back into the contest, the Grizzlies finally took the lead in the first few minutes of the fourth quarter.

The game heated up in the closing minutes as a result, and in the last seconds, Wells made the game-winning three-pointer. The Grizzlies have the skill; they simply need to adopt the correct mindset to show that they deserve to be among the top teams in the Western Conference once more. For that reason, their approach to playing should be applauded.
