The New England Patriots fell flat on their faces — again — plunging to an even fresh low against the injury-hampered Miami Dolphins in Sunday’s Week 5 game at Gillette Stadium, adding a fourth straight loss for Jerod Mayo’s club.

There’s no shortage of reasons to assign locker room blame following yet another disappointing loss, whether it’s the offensive line of New England, keeping Jacoby Brissett in the stater’s chair, or dubious late-game calling. This also applies to the people who are on the sidelines with Mayo.

Travis Thomas stated on NESN’s “Boston Has Entered The Chat” podcast, “I think Alex Van Pelt was too cute in trying to be the smartest guy in the room when you don’t have the personnel to do that.” “I can see why you would like to pass the ball. The Dolphins are yelling, “We dare you to beat us throwing the football,” as they are packing the box. Every group will act in that way. That’s what every team has been doing.

Where Patriots Went Wrong In Week 5 Loss To Limping Dolphins

The thing that makes this different is that many of the teams the Patriots have faced have been adept at stopping the run, and then—oh, by the way—Rhamondre (Stevenson) has a fumbling problem. Then, you realize that you are behind by two points and that you must toss the ball. That essentially limits your options for offensive maneuvers. At the Dolphins game, it was not the case.

Under Van Pelt’s offensive leadership, New England chose to pass the ball 34 times and run the ball just 19 times. That’s not ideal for a team whose offensive line is so bad that it can torture its quarterback to the point of no return every single week. It’s unrealistic to expect Brissett to create magic out of thin air, which is why taking a chance on New England’s biggest offensive vulnerability made the defeat even more dubious.

Danny Crossman is under pressure – The Splash Zone 10/8/24

After losing three straight games, the Miami Dolphins finally won one, but there were still a lot of problems with the squad. Special teams is one area where the Dolphins are still plagued. Kicker Jason Sanders missed a field goal on Sunday against the New England Patriots, while long snapper Blake Ferguson had the worst snap of his career rolling back the ball. Although there are mistakes made by the players, this club has made far too many mistakes since Danny Crossman became the special teams coordinator. This unit has been bottom of the barrel since 2019 and somehow Crossman has been able to hang around.

Check out that story here, and the roundup for the remainder of the day is below.

The Miami Dolphins are going into their bye week at 2-3, somehow. Now is an excellent moment to reorganize and address defensive and special teams issues.
