With Auburn falling to Georgia, Hugh Freeze is being ridiculed on social media.
Hugh Freeze spent the week criticizing his quarterback, Payton Thorne, who threw a game-winning pick-six, following Auburn’s Week 5 loss to Oklahoma. In the 129th installment of the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, the 2-3 Tigers are currently down 28-13 in Athens, and social media has determined that Freeze, not Thorne, is to blame for the team’s problems.
After the veteran quarterback, who was in his second year at Auburn, retained the ball on a zone read that the Bulldogs successfully defended, Freeze lashed out at Thorne. Freeze’s outburst was sparked by Thorne’s tackle for a loss on a fourth-and-1 play, but if Thorne had given Jarquez Hunter the ball instead, Jarquez would have been stopped short.
Thorne ran the running ball nevertheless, which sparked the outburst, according to former Alabama quarterback and ESPN color analyst Greg McIlroy, who speculated that Freeze might have given Thorne a check at the line of scrimmage to adjust the play call if he didn’t like the look from the Georgia defense. Freeze has been treated incredibly well by the internet, but the second-year head coach has not received the same kindness.

This was not the first time throughout the game that fans have criticized Freeze. Early on, Auburn’s attack had been highly productive, but they had trouble in the red zone. With eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, Thorne is 13/20 for 155 yards, and running back Jarquez With 91 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, Hunter has been the offense’s greatest performer; nevertheless, Freeze has given the ball to the quarterback for whom he is frequently chastised.

Auburn doesn’t have much of a chance to rally, and Freeze’s team will drop to 2-4 if Thorne is unable to do so.
