Overnight, the news that Celtic defender Alistair Johnston had exited the international match between Canada and the United States due to a hamstring issue sparked fears of a significant injury.

In Canada’s victory over their continental counterparts, Johnston was replaced after just 25 minutes, albeit he did so of his own volition and didn’t seem to be in much discomfort.

As the 2024–25 season gets off, the right-back has been playing really well for Celtic, so it is concerning to think that he might miss a significant amount of time due to injury.

Although he can’t match the Canadian’s level of performance, Anthony Ralston offers backup.

Fortunately, things are looking up this evening when Canada’s manager Jesse Marsch hinted that his replacement was more of a precaution than a significant problem.

Alister mentioned that he felt it would be wiser to go outside after experiencing some little hamstring tightness, according to Marsch [The Scottish Sun].

“Recall that he also did that at the June Holland game, and he is aware of his body.”

“Let’s hope it’s anything like that game, since he was able to recover and play against France a few days later. I’m hoping everything works out for him.

Celtic must be careful with Johnston this season

Johnston has done this in a way that is pleasant. Having already contributed so much to Canada this year, he has chosen to save himself for more difficult trials since he is aware that the game was merely a friendly between the two nations.

After yet another arduous season with Celtic, he went above and beyond to play a key part in their prolonged run in the Copa America. He hardly had a summer vacation before launching into a new season and playing frequently.

Over the upcoming stretch, the Bhoys need to exercise caution in how they use his playing time. We don’t want him to develop a muscle issue, to which exhaustion or overwork may contribute.

Johnston may have held his hand up here and told Canada officials he had to come off because he is eager to play as many Champions League games as possible.
