In the coming weeks and months, Sunderland will attempt to sign two important players to new contracts.
Now that the transfer window has closed, Kristjaan Speakman has announced that Sunderland will attempt to step up contract negotiations with Dennis Cirkin and Dan Neil.
With the signing of new contracts by Dan Ballard, Chris Rigg, and Jobe Bellingham, they have once again succeeded in holding onto their young talent during the summer. Still, Jack Clarke was allowed to leave Sunderland as he approached the last two years of his contract with no chance of renewal approved by Speakman and the Sunderland administration.
The Black Cats are in a strong situation right now because not many of their players have contracts expiring in the summer of 2025–2026; nevertheless, Neil and Cirkin’s current contracts will finish at the end of the 2025–2026 season. Amidst the uncertainty surrounding the club’s unresolved head coach search at the time, Neil turned down an initial contract offer earlier this summer. However, the club has consistently insisted that talks were still ongoing.
Contracts for Neil and Cirkin are undoubtedly a concern for us, according to Speakman.
“The problem with contracts is that after one is finished, there are always more that are getting closer. In that sense, it’s similar to painting the Forth Bridge. It’s a continuous task, and we’ve always made an effort to be ahead of the game in that regard.
“It was fantastic for us, in my opinion, to have Ballard, Jobe, and Chris Rigg recommit to the team, given their importance to the group, calibre of play, and financial worth. That those youngsters felt at ease enough to dedicate themselves here made us very happy. We wish to hold onto our greatest talent as we continue our adventure. As I’ve previously stated, it’s frequently more difficult to hold onto talent than to find new talent, but we’ll keep working towards that goal and making sure that our squad makeup keeps us in a really good position.
The contracts of Luke O’Nien and Patrick Roberts, the two senior players, expire in the summer of 2026, but in both instances, the club has the automatic option to extend for an additional year.
