Arne Engels, a Celtic midfielder, has never been booked or sent off for the Red Devils, yet he is prohibited from representing Belgium against France in their Nations League encounter on Monday.

The 21-year-old Celtic star has only made one appearance for the Belgian national team, coming off the bench on Friday against Israel. However, despite finishing the match against Israel without receiving a booking, he is suspended against France due to a little-known UEFA regulation.

A regular for the Belgium under-21 team, Engels received a few yellow cards during their qualifying for the European under-21 Championship the following year. As a result, he will serve a suspension. Engels arrived from Celtic in the summer.

The top player for the Hoops was booked both at home and away against Spain’s under-21 team as well as Malta’s under-21 team. Three yellow cards automatically result in suspension.

Engels did, however, get to play his first game on Friday because the senior team’s game was on a Friday that the Belgium under-21s did not have a game on.

They play Kazakhstan in a qualifying match on Wednesday, which is two days after the senior team plays France. Because the France match takes place within 48 hours of the under-21 game, his suspension from that competition has been carried over.

Because the Belgium under-21 team had a game planned within 48 hours of the Israel game, the Celtics star was only eligible to make his senior debut and must serve his suspension immediately.

Since then, Engels has made his way back to Parkhead, where he will be getting ready for their matches against Heart of Midlothian on September 14 and Slovan Bratislava on September 16.

The young player, who arrived from FC Augsburg on transfer deadline day, made his Celtic debut against Rangers one week ago. Going forward, he will be eager to establish himself.
