After Caleb Williams’ impressive preseason performance, Chicago Bears supporters are feeling upbeat, but Bill Belichick does not appear to be believing the buzz just yet. For the 2024 season, Belichick will be an analyst on “Inside the NFL.
“When the subject of Williams came up on Thursday night’s show, Belichick didn’t waste any time in expressing how unimpressed with the No. 1 overall pick’s preseason showing.
In preseason games, quarterbacks hardly rarely face the top defensive players on the other side, according to Belichick. Ryan Clark, the host, then questioned whether we should interpret Williams’s performance as “so accurate” during those games. Williams completed 10 of 20 passes, according to Belichick, who added the quarterback “wasn’t accurate.”
It wasn’t the best players on the opposing side, regardless of who they faced in the preseason. They weren’t really excellent. There were a few standout performances. That wasn’t how excellent they were, Belichick added.
Belichick has previously stated that he doesn’t think preseason results should be given too much weight, even if he was grinning when he made the remarks. He feels that assessing players in practice is less difficult than assessing them while they are competing against backup and reserve players.
Belichick is also well known for being harsh on rookie quarterbacks, as evidenced by his evaluation of Drake Maye before the draft. Heck, during meetings over the seven-time Super Bowl champion’s entire stay in New England, Belichick even tormented Tom Brady.
Tough coaches like Belichick are always looking for players to demonstrate their mettle, which is why the 72-year-old is anticipated to provide a lot of entertainment value in his numerous media appearances.
