DETROIT — During a live batting practice on Saturday afternoon, outfielder Wenceel Perez squared up against right-hand pitcher Reese Olson of the Detroit Tigers. The victor was sent to the 60-day disabled list, ending the season, while the loser was activated off the injured list.

I’m joking. Not much was on the line. However, both athletes are pressed for time to recover from their injuries before the season ends.

Olson has thrown several bullpen sessions since his right shoulder issue kept him out of action on July 21. Perez’s left oblique injury has kept him out of action since August 10.

In the upcoming days, both players may report to Triple-A Toledo for their rehabilitation assignments. However, the Tigers intend to strike a balance between aggression and restraint.

A.J. Hinch, the manager of the Tigers, said of Olson, “One setback and it’s over.” It’s critical that we maintain our strict control with him and gradually increase the amount. During our time on the field, I advised him to simply focus on moving forward and we would handle the rest. Cool, if he needs another live BP. Cool if he checks himself into treatment.
On Sunday, the major league rosters gained two new players. There will be a 28-player maximum on the active roster.

Though it’s not official yet, the Tigers are anticipated to call up right-handed reliever Ricky Vanasco and outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy.

The two new players were already on their way to Detroit on Saturday; the Tigers play Sunday afternoon in Detroit and then go cross-country to play in San Diego on Monday afternoon.

This season, Malloy was with Detroit for ten weeks; less than two weeks ago, he was optioned to Triple-A Toledo.

Malloy has had 204 plate appearances in the major leagues, batting.217 with a.698 OPS (94 OPS+). He has eight home runs, one triple, and six doubles. His 36.3 percent strikeout percentage is more concerning, but Malloy’s power will be a welcome addition to the Tigers lineup.

A month ago, Vanasco was acquired by the Los Angeles Dodgers in a cash deal. For the Mud Hens, he has thrown well, striking out 15 batters in 13 innings.

Vanasco made his major league debut earlier this season, pitching in two games for the Dodgers.

Tigers defeat Red Sox as Tarik Skubal dazzles once more.

On Saturday night, the Detroit Tigers hosted the Boston Red Sox and defeated them 2-1. Tarik Skubal recorded his longest outing of the season, striking out eight batters in eight innings. Skubal (16-4) did not issue a walk while giving up one run on four hits.

With 98 pitches, the American League Cy Young Award front-runner became the first big league pitcher to surpass 200 strikeouts. He’s got 201. Pitching for his sixth save, Tyler Holton finished the ninth.

With a double, Trey Sweeney drove in both of Detroit’s runs, helping the Tigers snap a two-game losing streak. The only player on both teams to record multiple hits in a game was Spencer Torkelson. He scored one run and had two hits.

In six innings, Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta (5-10) allowed two runs and six hits. He had one walk and six strikeouts. Their lone run came via a home run by Tyler O’Neill. In the first inning, O’Neill struck out two batters to start the scoring.

His 25th home run over the wall in left center field. In the second, Detroit seized the lead. Zach McKinstry doubled after Torkelson singled with one out.

Sweeney’s opposite-field double sent both runners home. By getting Jake Rogers to fly out and Ryan Kreidler to foul out, Pivetta was able to avoid more damage.

Riley Greene and Matt Vierling each singled with one out in the third, giving the Tigers two runners on base. Next, Pivetta fanned the next two hitters. After Kreidler singled off Greg Weissert to start the seventh inning, he was picked off.

Rich Hill replaced Parker Meadows and picked him off despite Meadows’ two-out single. Skubal ended the game with eight strikeouts in a row. After Connor Wong’s leadoff single in the fifth, he surrendered not a hit. On a double play, Wong was promptly eliminated.

With his final pitch, Skubal hit Ceddanne Rafaela with a fastball that topped 99 mph. In the eighth, O’Neill walked with two outs. The game was subsequently ended by Rafael Devers lining out to short. The three-game series between the clubs will conclude on Sunday afternoon.
