Tigers News: Following his recovery from an injury, Mize rejoins Detroit’s rotation against the Red Sox.
Pitcher Casey Mize will start Friday night’s game against the Boston Red Sox after the Detroit Tigers lifted him off the 60-day injured list. The Tigers also placed right-hander Alex Faedo on the 15-day disabled list in order to put him on the 60-day list, and they designated left-hander Joey Wentz for assignment. The 27-year-old Mize last touched the mound on June 30 and won vs the Los Angeles Angels before sustaining a hamstring strain in his left.
With 16 starts this season, he has a 2-6 record, a 4.23 ERA, 21 walks, and 58 strikeouts in 78.2 innings pitched. Mize recorded a 2.63 ERA in 13.2 innings pitched while on rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo, with four walks and 17 strikeouts. Mize was chosen by the Tigers as the first overall pick in the MLB draft of 2018. Including the three seasons before to this one, he has a 9-19 career record, a 4.28 ERA, 77 walks, and 206 strikeouts in 267.1 innings pitched in 55 games. He had back surgery in 2023 and Tommy John surgery in 2022.
The 26-year-old Wentz last pitched on Thursday against the Angels, giving up one hit and recording three strikeouts in two innings. He has struggled this season, going 0-2 with a 5.37 ERA, walking 27 and striking out 60 in 55.1 innings across 38 outings. Faedo, 28, has played in 37 games this season and has a 5-3 record with a 3.61 ERA. After reoccurring shoulder pain during a throwing practice in Lakeland, Florida, he was placed on the injured list.
The Tigers are trying to bolster their pitching staff going into the last stretch of the season, which is why they are making these roster adjustments.
