Sunderland look set to miss out on yet another striker target...

Sunderland have had no luck with their search for a new striker on deadline day.

This week’s absences for the Black Cats included Tom Cannon, Alexandre Mendy, and Roko Simic.

The team was once thought to have had a “pretty good” chance of signing Gift Orban from Lyon, but it is now thought that they have moved their attention to other targets.

The 22-year-old has almost ruled out a transfer, though, given his selection in their matchday squad for tonight’s match against Strasbourg.

Sunderland apparently showed interest in David Datro Fofana of Chelsea and was connected to another striker today.

But now they’ve suffered a setback in their hunt for the Ivorian.

Before tonight’s deadline, Fofana is ‘weighing up,’ according to writer Pete O’Rourke.

The Bundesliga team pursuing the 21-year-old is unknown, but it might remove him from Sunderland’s shortlist.

Sunderland fans are becoming more concerned as the deadline approaches

Fofana may have been a useful acquisition at the Championship level after netting four goals in 15 games for Burnley the previous season.

But since the links this morning, no one has brought up his name, so it should come as no surprise that he has no intention of moving to Wearside.

Although he wasn’t their first pick, supporters are growing increasingly irritated because they have missed out on so many forwards in the last 12 months.

In the last three hours of the window, Sunderland has very little choice but to target these names, and supporters’ expectations are rapidly fading.

However, the Black Cats are adept at keeping agreements under wraps, as seen by the unexpected announcement of Chris Mepham’s impending loan arrival.

Though it is getting less encouraging by the hour, perhaps the team is on the verge of acquiring a striker and the media is only now learning about it.

Although Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda are already signed by Sunderland, they were reportedly hoping to sign two more strikers before the deadline, so losing even one would be devastating.
