Not very long ago, Chicago Bears supporters started pushing for wide receiver Allen Robinson to sign a contract extension with then-general manager Ryan Pace.
Although Robinson played with the Bears for four seasons in all, from 2018 to 2021, it was his two seasons in 2019 and 2020 that established him as the center of the team’s offensive attack.
Robinson caught 98 passes for 1,147 yards and 7 touchdowns in the 2019 campaign. 2020 was Robinson’s year to surpass the 100 receptions mark for the season with 102 catches for 1,250 yards.
Bears supporters were begging for Robinson to sign an extension with the team following that two-year period of rising production. Ironically, when one considers the contract negotiations in retrospect, one of the models that were suggested as a potential model for Robinson’s contract extension with the Bears was the four-year deal worth little over $80 million that Keenan Allen signed with the Los Angeles Chargers before the 2020 campaign.
Allen was moved to the Bears as a result of his refusal to have his contract with the Chargers modified earlier this off-season.
However, since the 2020 season, Robinson’s performance has been steadily declining. Robinson was a late addition to the Bears offense in 2021 and spent the next two seasons playing for the Los Angeles Rams and Pittsburgh Pirates. Even though Robinson and Mitch Trubisky were reunited with the Steelers during the previous season, Robinson managed just 34 receptions for 280 yards and no touchdowns.
Allen Robinson’s decline is still ongoing.
This summer, Robinson signed with the New York Giants; however, he was forced to sign with the Detroit Lions practice squad after failing to make the team’s 53-man roster.
It serves as a reminder of how quickly life in the NFL can change. With Allen, DJ Moore, and rookie Rome Odunze, the Bears have one of the best wide receiver groupings in the NFL going into the 2024 season, while Robinson has rapidly faded into obscurity.

Practice squad roster tracker for the Chicago Bears: Complete List.
The Chicago Bears finalized their 53-man roster on Tuesday; as of Wednesday, the team’s practice squad roster and waiver claims will take center stage.
The Bears’ main concern when it comes to building their practice squad roster is the position of quarterback. The Bears cut both Brett Rypien and Austin Reed on Tuesday, which leaves them with just Tyson Bagent and Caleb Williams on the 53-man roster to start the season.
It will be interesting to watch which of the two waived quarterbacks the Bears decide to re-sign. Reed would be a developing option, but Rypien would provide the Bears with a backup quarterback on the practice squad in case of need. Given Bagent’s outstanding preseason performance, it seems likely that the Bears would feel at ease having Reed start quarterbacking the practice squad.

Waiver claims are due at 11 am and teams can begin assembling a practice squad after personnel notice is released (figure that happens roughly around noon, maybe a little before).

There were some noteworthy preseason favorites that were cut on Tuesday in addition to the quarterback position. Linebacker Micah Baskerville and cornerback Reddy Steward were two of those noteworthy cuts. Baskerville had a difficult road ahead of him to make the 53-man roster after the Bears acquired Darrell Taylor last weekend, but he showed promise in preseason play. For Steward in the secondary, the same is true. Putting both Steward and Baskerville back on the practice squad appears to be the Bears’ top priority out of all the cuts they made on Tuesday.
Wednesday at 2:00 PM is when the Bears are scheduled to exercise; it is anticipated that the practice squad will be assembled by then. Chicago Tribune’s Brad Briggs provided a recap of what Bears supporters should anticipate this morning.
