Jason Demetriou, a former Rabbitohs coach, unexpectedly takes on a new position, taking Justin Holbrook’s place.

Rugby league executives in Papua New Guinea think that appointing Jason Demetriou as the national team’s coach is a “very positive” move toward the league’s admittance.

After being fired as South Sydney’s head coach in April, Demetriou will lead the Kumuls at the Pacific Championships in October. This will be his first position as a coach.

The appointment coincides with Papua New Guinean companies’ government-backed application, which is expected to be the most likely contender for the NRL’s 19th license, which is scheduled to be awarded in 2028.

PNG NRL bid chief executive Andrew Hill stated, “We believe Jason’s appointment is another really positive step towards that goal.” “Everything we are doing is in preparation for becoming an NRL team.”

“It’s a great step forward to join the NRL to have someone with Jason’s caliber in the game take on the Kumuls head coaching role.”

Demetriou might stay in command until the 2026 World Cup, by which time the potential team would have fully begun NRL entrance preparations.

“We have been in talks with Jason and are looking forward to finalizing this soon. We are interested in developing a long-term relationship with Jason leading up to the 2026 RLWC,” PNGRFL Chief Executive Stanley Hondina stated.

After a 1-6 start to the 2024 season and the team’s elimination from the playoffs the year before, despite leading the premiership through 11 rounds, Souths let Demetriou go.

Suggestions that the 48-year-old found it difficult to control the more dominant players on the team hampered his coaching career. These conflicts led to the abrupt departure of club great Sam Burgess from the coaching staff in 2023.

Wayne Bennett had previously trained Demetriou at Brisbane and later Souths. After Demetriou succeeded the master coach in 2022, the Rabbitohs made it to the preliminary final.

In addition, he served as North Queensland’s assistant coach and St George Illawarra’s assistant coach during the Cowboys’ historic 2015 premiership season.

He played his whole playing career in the United Kingdom. Right now, he works for Triple M radio station as a commentator.

With Papua New Guinea, who have NRL talent including Justin Olam, Alex Johnston, and Jack de Belin, Demetriou expressed his excitement for what lays ahead.

“It’s an amazing chance to work with such a talented team, and the game in PNG is only getting better,” Demetriou added.

The team has a passion for the game that is evident every time they put on the Kumuls uniform and represent their nation, as I have observed with interest in the past few years.

“I am extremely excited to be able to work off the back of the tremendous amount of work that is being done at the school and academy level to help prepare the next generation of players,” the player said.

“Now is a fantastic time to play the game in this nation.”
