A quarterback duel still rages for the New England Patriots as they approach the final preseason game of 2024—something that did not appear likely in the early going of training camp. As he attempts to persuade his coaches that he should start the season’s opening week rather than grizzled veteran Jacoby Brissett, rookie sensation Drake Maye has come on late and received accolades.

Even though it seems more likely now than it did even a week ago that Maye will receive a shot right away, Brissett still seems to be in the stronger position in the end. Speaking to the media on Friday, offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt discussed this and said that Brissett’s advantage stems from his familiarity with Van Pelt’s scheme from their time together in Cleveland.

“Jacoby knows some of the tools you can utilize to get out of certain situations since he played in this offense. Things like those, pressure circumstances,” Van Pelt said to the press. Although Drake is still learning, in the past several weeks, he has shown a lot of promise. Certainly, he’s headed in the right path. Not only has Jacoby played in the NFL, but he has a ton of experience in this scheme. I’m at ease with his comprehension since we’ve had success in games together in Cleveland. But Drake is pressing once more.” When the Patriots play Washington on Sunday night, maybe Maye will have one last chance to impress and make a final push.

Former All-Pro CB receives suspension from NFL

It’s still not getting better for J.C. Jackson.

The NFL punished the former All-Pro cornerback for his arrest warrant from the previous season. Jackson was given a one-game suspension by the league on Friday for breaking the personal conduct policy.

The suspension began when Jackson was given an arrest warrant. Jackson was put on probation after being accused of speeding illegally in 2021. Jackson was the subject of an arrest warrant issued in September 2023 by Attleboro District Court following his nonattendance at a hearing about a probation violation.

28-year-old Jackson is a free agent. In 2018, he started playing with the Patriots, and that team went on to win the Super Bowl. Jackson led the NFL in passes defended with 23, and in 2021, he was nominated to the second team of the All-Pro team. In that season, Jackson also had 58 tackles and 8 interceptions. After four seasons with the Patriots and twenty-five interceptions, he was signed by the Chargers to a massive five-year, $82.5 million contract during the free agency period. After a disastrous time with the Chargers, Jackson was traded back to New England by the team.

Teams are now aware that Jackson will miss one game due to the suspension if they decide to sign him.
