The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports that Malachi Flynn and the Spurs have reached an agreement on a one-year contract. According to a league source, the deal isn’t guaranteed, Andrew Lopez of ESPN reports.
In an April game against Atlanta, the 26-year-old point guard made headlines with the Pistons after scoring 50 points off the bench. For Flynn, who has averaged 5.5 points per game in 213 games over his NBA career, the scoring binge was out of character.
After being selected by the Raptors with the 29th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Flynn played for three different teams in his debut season. He was sent to New York in late December as part of the original Anunoby transaction, following 31 games. In 14 games with the Knicks, he played just a little part before being traded to Detroit at the February deadline.
After joining the Pistons, Flynn had more opportunities to play, and he responded by averaging 14.3 minutes per night, 8.0 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 24 games. His rookie-scale contract expired at the end of the previous season, and Detroit decided not to extend a qualifying offer, leaving him unrestricted.
With three spots available for two-way contracts already taken by San Antonio and 15 players with fully guaranteed deals, Flynn will have a tough time getting a spot at training camp.
