The latest transfer updates from Celtic and Rangers
Leicester City and Ipswich Town, two newcomers to the English Premier League, are leading the chase to recruit Celtic attacker Fotis Ioannidis.
Brendan Rodgers, the manager of Celtic, is rumoured to be looking for a centre forward this summer and is said to think highly of Ioannidis, 24, who put up a number of standout displays in the Greek Super League the previous year.
The forward for Panathinaikos, who finished the previous season with 22 goals in 40 games across all competitions, was mentioned in January 2023 as the Hoops’ top target while Ange Postecogolou was manager.
The Daily Record reported in April 2024 that the Hoops were one of several European teams closely monitoring the striker’s availability going into the summer, having renewed their interest in him.
However, according to reports from The Telegraph, Ioannidis now looks to be beyond Celtic’s budget and is the target of an aggressive £23.2 million offer from Rodgers’ previous team, Leicester City.
Due to injuries to Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka heading into the new season, Leicester desperately needs a productive centre forward to increase their chances of winning under new manager Steve Cooper.
The source adds that the Tractor Boys may still return to the negotiating table with a stronger offer as they try to assemble a club strong enough to compete in the Premier League. It also discloses that fellow promoted team Ipswich Town also made a sizable offer earlier in the summer that was turned down.
Italian side make move for Rangers forward
According to TuttoMercato, Serie A team Cagilari has rekindled its interest in Rangers attacker Cyriel Dessers.
Since moving to Glasgow in 2023, Dessers has made 56 appearances in all competitions, scoring 23 goals. This has attracted the attention of Cagliari, who were in the running to recruit the 29-year-old last summer prior to his move to Ibrox.
Dessers, who scored six goals in 26 games for Cremonese prior to moving to Scotland, has Serie A experience and might be a good fit for Cagliari, who scored just 42 goals in 38 league games the previous season.
